Mastering YACHT Electronics
Calibration for Racing Yachts

The difference between a good race and a great race is often measured in feet and seconds. Precise calibration is the fundamental step to finding them.

What You'll Master

Every Sensor. Every SIGNAL. HIGH QUALITY DATA.

How Your Nav System Actually Works

Understand the full chain from sensors to displays, and why a miscalibration anywhere in that chain corrupts every number downstream.

Signal Types and Network Protocols

Learn the difference between pulse, analog, NMEA 0183, and NMEA 2000 signals, how each works, and the most common failure points to troubleshoot.

Sensor Calibration From the Ground Up

Step-by-step calibration of the sensors that matter most: boatspeed, masthead wind angle, heel and trim, rudder, depth, and compass.

True Wind Calibration: The Holy Grail

Master the tack-to-tack method for TWA correction and learn to identify and fix upwash errors that make your TWS over-read downwind.

Using Software to Calibrate and Diagnose

Apply Expedition and Sailing Performance Calibrator to replay log data, spot systematic errors, and push corrections directly to your processor.

Building a Calibration Mindset

Know when your data is trustworthy, when to question it, and how to maintain a calibration log that keeps your system race-ready all season.

Your Instructor

Marcel Korte

Marcel is a professional navigator and marine electronics specialist with over two decades at the top of the sport. He provides weather forecasting and routing for high-profile campaigns and consults on onboard electronic systems across the full spectrum of offshore racing — from exploration superyachts to record-setting super maxis.

His track record speaks for itself. He has won the Rolex Giraglia twice, once as navigator aboard the Ker46 Lisa R and once with Red Bandit, and set the course record for the Palermo-Montecarlo race aboard the 100-foot maxi Black Jack. He has navigated alongside world-class tacticians including Jesper Banks on the Ker46 Lady Mariposa campaign and competed with him at the 12 Meter World Championship. More than three-quarters of the races he has sailed have finished on the podium.

A trained systems electrician with two postgraduate degrees in Business Information Systems and IT, Marcel brings a rare combination of hands-on technical skill and analytical depth. Two things drive him — sailing and data — and he is at his best when passing that knowledge on. This masterclass distils decades of frontline experience into a practical, no-nonsense framework that works whether you're running a grand prix programme or getting your club racer properly dialled in for the season.
